A striking work from New York-based pop surrealist Joshua Dietz, this large-format painting on wood panel showcases the artist's signature blend of vivid color, fantasy, and dark whimsy. A chimeric animal figure — part zebra, part unidentifiable creature — stands suspended against a luminous gradient sky that shifts from deep crimson to fiery orange and warm gold. The figure's legs dissolve into impossibly long, spindly extensions adorned with stacked colorful cubes, a recurring motif in Dietz's work that evokes both wonder and unease in equal measure.
Dietz draws on the traditions of Surrealism — most notably the elongated, dreamlike forms associated with Salvador Dalí — and filters them through a contemporary pop sensibility. His animal subjects are never quite what they seem: familiar enough to recognize, yet strange enough to unsettle. The result is work that rewards sustained looking.
Presented in a natural wood float frame that allows the panel edges to breathe. Attributed to Joshua Dietz by the seller. Not signed on the front.
